Historique :	C'est l'objet le plus ancien de l'observatoire. Il a toujours été en fonction à Lyon. Ce quart de cercle n'a pas sa lunette. Il est non signé, mais il figure dans l'inventaire de 1841 qui précise qu'il a été construit par Canivet et déposé à l'Observatoire de la ville de Lyon en 1822. Cet instrument est peut-être l'un des rares objets issus du Collège de la Trinité, aujourd'hui lycée Ampère de Lyon, il appartenait aux Jésuites et a abrité le premier observatoire installé à Lyon, fondé par le père Saint-Bonnet en 1701. Cet observatoire a été détruit lors du siège de Lyon en 1793 et la quasi-totalité de son équipement scientifique très riche, a été mis en caisse et envoyé à Paris pour y être distribué à des citoyens méritants (sic). De son côté, le Père Lefèvre, dernier directeur du Collège de la Trinité, réussit à sauver des instruments personnels, dont on ignore le sor. Seuls échappent à la tourmente quelques instruments en trop mauvais état, dont ce quart de cercle sur pied, déjà complètement dépassé à cette époque. Les instruments sauvegardés seront transférés du lycée Ampère au Palais Saint Pierre en 1867 puis remis à l'Observatoire de Lyon en 1879.
