Historique :	L'Observatoire de Lyon possédait deux lunettes méridiennes, l'une fixe dite Grand méridien d'Eichesn et l'autre portative dite Petit méridien de Rigaud. Il a été installé à l'Observatoire de Lyon dès 1880 dans la salle méridienne devenue aujourd'hui laboratoire d'optique. Ses principales fonctions étaient la création ou la révision de catalogues de positions stellaires et la détermination de l'heure. Il a déterminé l'heure affichée aux carrefours de l'agglomération lyonnaise jusqu'aux années 20. Il a été mis hors service en 1934. C'est un instrument clé pour tous les observatoires. Lorsqu'on créée les observatoires en province, c'est clairement pour y placer un réseau d'instruments de ce type. Tous en auront un identique venant du même constructeur. Aujourd'hui, il n'en reste que deux en place à Besançon et Alger. C'est un instrument de position et le le plus gros installé de manière fixe.
